The September character trait in Ms. Rasmussen’s class at Renaissance Charter School at Chickasaw Trail was “citizenship”. Though she models and teaches her students to be an outstanding citizen on a daily basis, she thought it was especially important that they knew about the brave and courageous citizens on 9/11. The class watched a couple student-friendly videos about the heroes from 9/11, and discussed questions about that day, as well as shared stories. One student shared a story about her aunt that worked in the towers, but didn’t go to work that day due to a dentist appointment. Ms. Rasmussen wanted the students to show gratitude by writing kind words and decorating ribbons for the firefighters in New York City that would be mailed to them. The firefighters responded with a short note thanking the students.
